Rubber Latex Allergy

Any one can develop an allergy to latex. It is more common for those in regular contact with latex, in particular, healthcare workers, those working in the rubber industry or people which allergies to certain foods (bananas, kiwis, avocados and mangoes, potatoes or tomatoes).

Some allergic reactions are not to the latex itself, but from the residues of chemicals used to accelerate the cross-linking process. Although this may be confused with an allergy to latex, it is distinct from it, typically taking the form of hypersensitivity.

Symptoms of latex allergy:

  • itchy rash
  • sneezing or runny nose
  • itchy eyes
  • anaphylaxis

Anyone suffering severe reactions to latex, should contact a doctor immediately.
